Kilas Pendidikan #14: After Reading, So What?

Kilas Pendidikan #14: After Reading, So What?

In this edition of PSPK Education Brief, we present three articles that explore more deeply the growing literacy movement in our country.

In her article, “Improving Children’s Literacy: Is the School Literacy Movement (GLS) Enough?”, Itje Chodidjah outlines various definitions of literacy and examines the vibrant implementation of the School Literacy Movement (Gerakan Literasi Sekolah/GLS) across different regions. She raises an important question: Is GLS a substantive effort to improve literacy, merely a ceremonial activity, or an initial step that must be sustained and strengthened within a broader literacy movement?

Tati Duriyah Wardi, in her article “Tracing the Path of Literacy, Toward Digital Literacy,” goes further by discussing different types of literacy, including what is often referred to as “new” literacy—digital literacy—which has become increasingly relevant today. She also explains the continuum of literacy development in relation to a child’s developmental stages. Understanding this literacy continuum helps us identify the phases of children’s literacy growth, as well as when and how particular approaches or skills should be introduced.

Finally, in her article “Interpreting Literacy from Multiple Perspectives,” Chandra Putri introduces an independent literacy and numeracy assessment tool called Pemantik. When its purpose, scope, and limitations are clearly understood, such a tool can assist educators, literacy advocates, and policymakers in mapping existing conditions and in designing and implementing literacy improvement programs tailored to the unique needs of students, schools, and regions.
