Improving the quality of higher education has become a strategic priority, particularly in an era focused on strengthening human capital development. The increasing complexity of higher education management—ranging from curriculum development and institutional governance to quality assurance—calls for independent and credible accreditation mechanisms that are responsive to disciplinary and societal needs.
In this context, Independent Accreditation Agencies (Lembaga Akreditasi Mandiri / LAM) serve as autonomous bodies responsible for accrediting academic programs in higher education institutions. These agencies may be established by either professional communities or the government and are expected to provide objective, discipline-based assessments that complement the national quality assurance framework.
This Policy Brief examines strategies to optimize the role of Independent Accreditation Agencies within the higher education ecosystem. It explores institutional challenges, coordination with key stakeholders, and opportunities to strengthen the contribution of LAM in enhancing the quality, relevance, and accountability of higher education in Indonesia.
